Vehicle and Pedestrian Detection in eSafety Applications

چکیده
This paper describes a target detection system on road environments based on Support Vector Machine (SVM) and monocular vision. The final goal is to provide pedestrian-to-car and car-to-car time gap. The challenge is to use a single camera as input, in order to achieve a low cost final system that meets the requirements needed to undertake serial production in automotive industry. The basic feature of the detected objects are first located in the image using vision and then combined with a SVMbased classifier. An intelligent learning approach is proposed in order to better deal with objects variability, illumination conditions, partial occlusions and rotations. A large database containing thousands of object examples has been created for learning purposes. The classifier is trained using SVM in order to be able to classify pedestrians, cars and trucks. In the paper, we present and discuss the results achieved up to date in real traffic conditions.

An Assessment of the Impact of Pedestrian Refuge Islands on Vehicle Speed Changes and Pedestrian Safety: Case Study in Tehran
Pedestrians are among the most vulnerable road users. Speed of vehicles is considered as one of the major causes of danger for pedestrians crossing the street. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to devise suitable solutions to reduce speed of vehicles. One of these solutions is installation of Pedestrian Refuge Islands (PRI) in very wide midblocks. With regard to fluctuations in pedestrian a...
متن کاملPedestrian Gap Acceptance Logit Model in Unsignalized Crosswalks Conflict Zone
Pedestrians are the most vulnerable road users. For evaluating and modifying pedestrian safety in unsignalized crosswalks, the first important issue is to identify and explore factors affecting the interaction behavior of pedestrians andvehicles in conflict areas. By analyzing those factors and determining how they affect road user's behavior, we canrepresent the plans and proc...
متن کاملPedestrian Detection and Tracking from Low-Resolution Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Thermal Imagery
Driven by the prominent thermal signature of humans and following the growing availability of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), more and more research efforts have been focusing on the detection and tracking of pedestrians using thermal infrared images recorded from UAVs. However, pedestrian detection and tracking from the thermal images obtained from UAVs pose many challenges due to the low-res...
متن کاملPedestrian Recognition and Tracking of Vehicles using a vehicle based Multilayer Laserscanner
Pedestrian protection systems will become an essential safety function in future vehicles, as the EU governments will force automotive manufacturer to improve pedestrian safety within the next few years. For such systems the ability to recognise pedestrians is mandatory. Other applications like PreCrash or Automatic Emergency Break systems require a reliable tracking of vehicles close to the ow...
متن کاملVision-based Pedestrian Detection Using Haar-like Features
This paper describes a vision-based pedestrian detection system for robots, and autonomous vehicles. For that purpose the Haar-like features were used to discriminate pedestrians. Those features were used as input in a learning algorithm, based on AdaBoost, which selects a small number of critical visual features from a larger set and yields an extremely efficient classifier. The proposed syste...
